Are you looking for ideas on how to convert your loft into extra living space?

Well, converting your loft into extra living space may be easier than you think…

Over the last few months, enquiries from people seeking advice on how to convert your loft into some extra living space has increased for a number of reasons.

ways to convert your loft into extra living space

One of the main reasons appears to be because family sizes are increasing due to the fact that grown up children are finding it difficult to get onto the property ladder and are having to live with their parents for longer and or because some families are now having to accommodate other family members moving back in with them.

Some families are even having to take in lodgers to help pay the bills as living costs continue to rise.

How to convert your loft into some extra living space – Plan Wisely and Carefully

Converting your loft into extra living space is a great way and opportunity to create some of that much sort after extra living space. It can also help to increase the value of your property.

That said… it is important to remember from the very outset that you need to carefully think about and plan exactly what it is that you are seeking to achieve by converting your loft into some extra living space.

The reason is quite simple.

Time and time again we get involved in loft conversion projects around Cardiff, Caerphilly, Penarth, Barry and Bridgend whereby the customer has for whatever reason been ill advised on what a loft conversion costs and what work is really involved when converting a loft into extra living space.

That is why it is important to ensure that you design a loft conversion based around the budget and the structural needs of your property rather than accepting an ‘off the cuff’ quote or without some careful forward planning.

Converting your loft into extra living space with out having a thorough structural survey done is a recipe for disaster. From our experience the reason people don’t take this wise course of action is in an attempt to save money on seeking survey costs design services. By doing so can and does generally end up costing people a lot of money than if they had done so in the beginning.

How to Convert Your Loft into Some Extra Living Space ……. Correctly

Whatever you do, don’t try and save money by not having a structural survey carried out or by not having a loft conversion expert design and offer his services. Many older properties need carefully upgrading works to be able to accommodate converting your loft.

There is no point in cutting corners and starting work on converting your loft only to find once you do that areas of your home need extra work to deal with the additional load a loft conversion adds.

The Best Way To Add An Orangery To Your Home ?

If you’re thinking about increasing the living space to your property, one unique and modern way is to add an orangery to your home.

Here at Derwood Homes we specialize not only in building Orangeries but also designing them for our clients and if need be obtaining planning permission.

How to add an orangery to your homeThere are many types of Orangeries and designs to choose from but rather than have to stick to a specific design that some companies can only offer their customers we highly recommend allow a company to design an Orangery not only to compliment your home but to also compliment your budget.

That is just one reason why we have become one of the most popular Orangery Companies in South Wales.

How Much Does It Cost To Add An Orangery To Your Home ?

Well… if truth be known it can vary quite a bit. It really does depend on the size, the features and other internal works that are needed when you add an Orangery to your home.

Some companies for example forget to tell you about the extra work and costs that you should consider when building an Orangery such as taking down internal walls and installing steel beams, laying new flooring, adding extra lights and radiators or even installing paving stones around the outside of a new orangery. If you want to add an Orangery to your home be sure that whoever you choose to build your Orangery it is someone who will, from the outset make you aware of all of the works that are needed to complete the project.

How To Add An Orangery To Your Home

Careful planning and budgeting is the key… Two key Orangery features that appeal to many people are the roof canopies and Bi-fold or large french doors that Orangeries tend to have as part of their design features.

how to add an orangery to your home These features alone add to the cost of building an orangery but nevertheless appointing a good company who can add an Orangery to your home for you should be able to advise you of the best options available from the outset to suit your needs and budget.

Over the last few years we have designed and built Orangeries all over South Wales including Cardiff, The Vale of Glamorgan, Porthcawl, Bridgend, The Valleys, Penarth, Barry, Port Talbot, Swansea and many more areas. But what is so exciting for us is the fact that everyone who has appointed us to design and build an Orangery has been over the moon with our quality of workmanship and customer service.

If you are seeking to add an Orangery to your home.. then feel free to contact us to arrange a free design, survey and quote for you.

Outdoor Living Is A Great Way To Bring The Inside Out

“Show me your garden and I shall tell you what you are.”Alfred Austin

Outdoor Living : Patio or decking?

How to create outside living space

You can tell a lot about a person by their garden, for example a person who enjoys gardening and outdoor living will have a well kept garden, whereas the less enthusiastic gardeners will have more untended gardens that have been left to overgrow.

But whether you are a gardening enthusiast or not, gardens offers a great way to create more living space by adding some  new outdoor living areas.

So what is the best way to add some outdoor living space?

Building a patio or installing decking can provide extra space whether it is for dining, relaxing or even to provide a playing area for the children but what is the best option to choose?

Patio, derived from the Spanish word for “courtyard”,offers flexibility as is can be installed anywhere…attached to the main house or even in the middle of the garden.

They can be built from a number of different materials including concrete pavers, stone and rock and are built directly on the ground . Installing patios can offer a great way to add new outdoor living space or to revamp an existing unsightly slab of concrete.

outdoor living ideas

Decking however is generally constructed from wood or synthetic wood which helps to give a feeling of warmth and beauty.

Decking is generally attached to the main house and can be built on different levels, therefore often needing safety rails installed. If you have great views around you, then decking can offer a great way to take advantage of those views.

Both building a patio or installing decking can offer a great way to provide extra outdoor living space and it will be a matter of personal choice as to which you prefer.

So what else do you need to take into consideration when considering adding a patio or decking as part of your garden makeover?

Outdoor Living : Choosing The Right Location

Location is an important factor when creating outdoor living space and this will largely be determined by what you intend to use the area for.

If you intend to use it for outdoor dining then you would need to choose an area that is near to the kitchen.

In addition to this if you intend to entertain family and friends in this area then you will also need to find a location that offers privacy away from neighbours and outside noise.

Whereas, if you plan on using the space as a play area for the children then you may want to locate it a little bit further from the house so as not to be constantly disturbed by the noise of children playing!

Outdoor Living : Adding Extra Touches

When you have decided on whetherOutdoor living ideasr to install decking or build a patio and have decided on a location, the next step is to add some extra touches such as plants and furniture to make the area more appealing.

Try to choose plants that are quite low maintenance, (especially if you do not like gardening and also to ensure that you have more time to relax in your new outdoor living space), and to buy furniture that compliments the colours and style of your new outdoor living area and you will have an outdoor living space that will make your neighbours jealous!

Cardiff Builder Derwood Homes Discovers Most Expensive Petrol Station In Cardiff

As one of Cardiff’s leading building companies we always pride ourselves in trying to save our customers money. But what recently shocked us is how some companies appear to ‘rip their customers off’.

Most Expensive petrol station in Cardiff

We know times are tough but yet we still try our very best to be competitive and believe as a community so should every other business in the country.

Despite rising fuel prices we still offer free quotes and advice for new house extensions, new builds, loft conversions, garage conversions and Orangeries.

We continue to offer all of our customers a first class service, quality workmanship and value for money.

We have an excellent reputation with our suppliers despite pressurizing them to keep their material prices as low as possible.

Is This The Most Expensive Petrol Station In Cardiff ?

But one thing is for sure, we wouldn’t dream of ripping our customers off. Instead, we pass down our savings to our customers, since every penny helps…

In fact, we even allow some of our customers to use our trade accounts to buy materials themselves to save money…

But what recently came as a complete shock to us was the discovery a Cardiff based Gulf garage was charging per litre for diesel which in all honesty appears to us as being a complete ‘rip off’.

Most expensive Petrol Station In Cardiff

This garage has now earned our vote as being the most expensive petrol station in Cardiff and who knows maybe in the UK. So be warned.. About 300 yards up the road is another garage charging the average price of £140.90 per litre…. so you’re better off filling up there.

The Gulf Petrol Station in question is situated on Llantrisant Road as you head into Llandaff from Llantrisant on the A4119.

Whilst the average price per litre of fuel in Cardiff is currently £140.90 this garage is actually charging a whopping £161.90 per litre….!!!!!

Cardiff's most expensive petrol stationI’m sure with so many people looking at the forecourt price display board in disbelief it has to be a matter of time before someone crashes their car for taking their eyes off the road !

Surely this garage should be ashamed of being Cardiff’s most expensive petrol station... if not why not….?

Let this be a warning to everyone…. in particular reputable builders and motorists…. it pays to shop around…. Whilst the cheapest is not always the best you have to be on your toes not to allow anyone to ‘rip you off’…..

Maybe the fact that the cost of fuel in this particular Cardiff Gulf Petrol Station was so high was the sole reason why the forecourt was empty ! …

That being said …on a brighter note.. B&Q currently have some great offers on for anyone looking to save some money on building materials and so do Travis Perkins !

Shop around…. but at the same time ensure you find someone particularly builders that have a good reputation in Cardiff

Our Cardiff building services cover all areas of Cardiff, such as…

Adamstown, Cardiff bay, Canton, Cathays, Culverhouse Cross, Cardiff Gate,  Birchgrove, Butetown,  Fairwater, Grangetown, Llanedeyrn, Leckwith,  Lisvane, Llanishen, Llanrumney, Maindy,  Pentwyn, Penylan, Pontcanna, Radyr, Roath, Rumney, Splott, St Mellons, Thornhill, Tremorfa, Whitchurch
